Thrifty Thursday: DIY Decorative Candles!

My husband and I are in the process of converting our guest room into a big girl’s room for our daughter. It’s been a bit of a long process, but hopefully it will be completed soon! In the mean time I’ve been working on some DIY projects and this is one of them! I found these battery operated candles at the Dollar Tree today and thought I could dress them up with some scrapbook paper. I’m a bit of a modge podge nut right now, so the whole project really excited me! Next on the to-do list, make some candle holders! Here is a little tutorial of how I did this!

Candles for the Dollar Tree, obviously $1.00 each! The scrapbook paper is from Michael’s and I paid $.99 for it.
I tried to take the wrapping off of them, but it wouldn’t come off, so I just modge podged over the paper. (I was able to get the plastic coating off the paper though)

Cut the scrapbook paper to the size that you want. I did 3 1/2 inches wide and 9 inches long.

I then brushed modge podge of the candle, laid the paper over the modge podge, then modge podged over the scrapbook paper. Tada! That easy! Now mine didn’t come out exactly perfect, but I don’t think anyone will notice once they are on candle holders unless they look closely.

Weekend Project DIY: Homemade Framed Calendar & Daily Schedule!

DSCF2557

Here is our new calendar and daily schedule system that I made up. It’s in our kitchen, so everyone can see it. I found a frame I had in the house already, painted an existing black matt green and brown to match my home decor, and whipped this homemade calendar system up in just a few hours. I LOVE it to say the least and it’s kind of cool! Look at what you already own and see if you can come up with your own calendar system. It’s way more fun when you don’t have to pay anything extra for a project!

Here is a close-up of the calendar. (Yes I need new dry erase markers, which is why the calendar is not filled up more.)  I included a Weekly Menu spot so we would all know what is for dinner each night. The little drawer below our calendar is where I will store the dry erase markers.

Here is our daily schedule when we spend our days at home, which is at least 4 days a week. There are other days when we have activities or I just need to run some errands.

I hope this helps you get organized, and I hope you will make a daily schedule. Children are much more behaved when they are in a routine, and it helps me make sure I’m spending plenty of time with her; instead of being on the computer all day!

DIY: Valentine’s Day Picture Frame!

DSCF2537

So I thought I’d share with you my refurbished picture frame I painted yesterday! I have a drawer full of old picture frames that I just don’t want to throw away, so I used one of them and made this. Thankfully I had all the supplies for this project and I didn’t have to leave the house! Here is what I did:

Step 1:

Paint 2 coats of red acrylic paint on a picture frame (any surface). Please allow the first coat of paint to dry before applying the second coat. Allow second coat to dry. *This frame came from Walmart and cost me $3.00 a few months back. They still are selling these frames at the same price.

Step 2:

Mix red glitter and modge podge together and cover the entire surface. The frame should be white with flex of glitter coming through because of the modge podge, allow this to dry completely. The modge podge will dry clear, so don’t worry.

Step 3:

Paint a final coat of Satin Varnish over the top to protect the paint from chipping. This will also help keep the glitter adhered to the frame and it won’t flake off.

Step 4:

Decorate with a pretty bow or flower by hot gluing it on!

Now you will have a gorgeous Valentine’s Day frame for your home! So cheap and so cute!

Thrifty Thursday: Garland Out Of Paint Chips!

I was amazed when I saw this picture of garland made out of paint chips! My mind started twirling as I thought how could I make one of these for my home. Since we are past Halloween, it would be adorable to make a Thanksgiving one to go on the fireplace. Kids would LOVE to help make this, and it would cost you near to nothing! Another idea I had is to make one to go around a Christmas tree. We let our daughter have her own Christmas tree in her bedroom, I think she would love to have a pink, red, white, and lime green paint chip garland around her tree this year! I just had to share this idea with you. Hope your day has been thrifty!

Weekend Project: Make A Hair Bow Holder

by at October 1, 2011 in Decorating, Household

When it comes to making a hair bow holder there are many styles out there. Basically it’s a long piece of ribbon attached to something that you clip your hair bows onto. I made one for my daughter and I love it! Michael’s crafts has all the supplies you need when making one and you can use your 40% to make it an even better deal! Here are a few examples of what hair bow holders can look like.
