What Is A Good Stock Up Price?

by at August 9, 2011 in How To Save On

Today someone asked what I think is a good “stock” up prices. While there is no “price” rule I do have some guidelines for myself that I use to know a good “stock up” price!
.
Here are some examples:
.
-Toothbrush: Free
-Floss: Free
-Mouthwash: $0.50
-Deodorant: Free
-Body Wash: $0.50
-Soap: $0.25
-Lotion: $0.50
-Shampoo/Conditioner: $0.50
-Feminine Hygine Products: Free – $50 tops + there are a ton… of samples for these
-Shaving Cream: $0.50
-Disposable Razors: Free
-Razors, (ex. Gillette Fusion or Venus): $1
-Detergent: $1.50
-Dish Washer Tabs or Liquid: $0.50
-Toilet Paper: $0.25 per roll
-Cleaning Supplies: $0.50 or less
-Baby Wipes: $1.00 or less per box
-Diapers: $0.11 per diaper
-Candles: $1.00 or less (high quality)
-Aluminum Foil: $0.50
-Fruit: $1.00/lb
-Meat: $2/lb, $4/lb Steaks (high quality)
-Potatoes: $3/10 lb bag
-Soda: $2.50/12 pk
-Cereal: $$0.50 per box
-Canned veggies: $0.35
-Frozen veggies: Free
-Pasta: $0.25
-Pasta Sauce: $.50
.
My rule of thumb is if I am saving 90% or more off of the retail price I have most likely found a rock bottom priced deal and it’s time to stock up. I also use the $1 and Under Drug Store Deals list posted on Tuesday Evenings as a guide to stock up for the week.
.
So what are your stock up prices?

Ask The Readers- How To Save On Baby Supplies

by at April 28, 2011 in Baby, How To Save On

I get questions a lot about saving on formula and other baby supplies.  I try to post about diaper deals when I come across them, but it has been a long time since I have had to buy formula.  So, I thought I would ask all of you…

How do you save on formula, diapers and other baby supplies?  Let us know in the comments section below!

Save At Home Mommy Kandi emailed: “I save on formula – similac to be exact.  There was a $3 off coupon awhile back and at target/walmart the ready to feed was only $3.83-$4 so each container was no more than $1.  Then they raised the prices everywhere and then released a $5 off coupon expiring 5/31 so I went on ebay and bought the coupons.  With the cost of the coupon my total cost per bottle – currently babies r us has it the cheapest (I get the organic one) it came to no more than $1 a bottle.  I’ve stocked up as much as I can….I just hope I didn’t overbuy – or under buy for that matter!!”

How To Save On… Bills!

This week I made three phone calls to companies because I felt like I was paying too much for their services.  I got an email from DirecTV telling me that my bill was going up.  I just finished my contract with them so I had it on my list of things to do anyway to check into how I could pay less for the TV.  I called and asked and was able to go down a package without losing many channels and he was able to give me an extra $10 off per month!  Just by calling, I was able to cut my bill almost in half!!

Then, I noticed that my $5.99 newspaper subscription had gone up to $11.50.  I gave them a call and they said that my promo period had expired.  I asked if there was anything he could do to lower my cost and after checking, he was able to reinstate the promo rate for another 6 months.  Again, almost half off!

Finally, I checked with my insurance agent to make sure that he had rerun all my policies before the new term started.  Of course, he had, that is why I love them, and ours actually went down at least $30.00 a month!

Checking on your bills, asking for discounts and being willing to switch companies if they don’t help you, is an easy way to cut costs.  It never hurts to ask and companies would often rather give you a break and keep you as a customer than lose you altogether.  What are you waiting for?  Get out your statements and see if there are any bills you might be able to cut back on.  3 calls and I saved $66 a month!

How To Save On… Redecorating Your Home

by at January 3, 2011 in How To Save On

Believe it or not, now is a great time to redecorate.  Although the recession may have you tightening the old belt a bit, many businesses have had to do the same and as a result, you can find great deals on both the materials and labor needed to refurbish your space.  You may have to do the legwork of shopping around, haggling, and securing price-matching if you want to find the best deals, but you are in the rare situation of having the upper hand in a buyer’s market.

There are several places you can look for discount items, but probably the best if you want all new elements is to start by shopping online.  Most e-tailers don’t have the expense of running a storefront to contend with (head count, lease, utilities, etc.).  As a result, they can offer screaming deals on the same materials you would find in stores for a lot more.  But if you’re not too particular about the relative newness of items, then you stand to save a lot more.  By searching on Craig’s List you can often find great prices on materials in practically new condition.  And stores that sell reclaimed furniture, cabinets, flooring, and so on can also net you a large price reduction (and they often refurbish anything that goes up for sale).

Once you have your materials, you will need to consider labor.  A contractor and a crew can quickly get expensive (especially since most remodeling jobs suffer setbacks and go over schedule), but again, you can use your knowledge of the market to secure a discounted price.  You can also adopt a DIY attitude.  Get a home repair guide and take on simple tasks yourself.  You can probably lay flooring, paint, and install toilets, just to name a few activities, but you may want to leave major plumbing, electrical, and carpentry up to the pros (since they have the knowledge and experience to make sure everything is up to spec and guaranteed to work).  In the long run, doing as much as you can on your own is going to save you a lot.

How To Save On… Bread

by at December 21, 2010 in How To Save On

Today we have a post from Cam at FrugalDay.  She shares her experiences and tips on shopping at Bread Outlets.

“My family uses a ton of bread. I love getting fresh breads for dinner parties and special guests. But for everyday living, I shop at the bread outlet. We have an Entenmann’s-Oroweat Bakery Outlet right here in SF, so it’s perfect for our family. I go to the outlet twice a month, and get all the bread I need for my family. I have a small storage freezer, so I stock up for a two week period. I typically save about 40% over typical grocery store prices, and am getting fresh bread and treats my family enjoys.

Here is everything you need to know about shopping at the Entenmann’s-Oroweat Bakery outlet.

What is a bread outlet?

There are many bread outlets available, but I shop at the The Entenmann’s-Oroweat Bakery outlet. They are widely available and are probably the largest bread outlet. So when I talk about bread outlets, I’m specifically talking about my experience with the Entenmann’s-Oroweat Bakery.

Bread has a “use by” date. When the store gets close to the “use by” date, about a week before, they typically remove the bread. The bakery comes and picks it up, taking it directly to the outlet. By the time the breads are sent to the outlet, they still have several days before the “use by” date. So the outlets still stock perfectly usable bread.

What brands are at the Entenmann’s-Oroweat Bakery outlet?

I like shopping at the Entenmann’s-Oroweat outlet. They have several other brands available at their store too. You can get Entenmann’s, Oroweat, Thomas, Boboli, Red Mill, and Tia Rosa brands. You can get every bakery product you need at one stop.
