Target Troubles
Hello

I have seen so many posts lately about people having problems in their local Target stores using coupons. I myself, have had my fair share of difficulties as well. I decided to do a little research of my own because I wanted to know the exact policy so that I knew what to push and what to let go. I emailed Target corporate to get my own copy of their coupon policy to keep with me at all times. That way, if the cashier tries to refuse a legit coupon, I can pull out my policy as my justification. I know that sounds harsh but I have had some crazy cashiers who didn’t want to accept any of my coupons simply because they were unsure. They obviously didn’t know who they were messing with:) Here is what the email I received said:
When accepting coupons, we use the following guidelines:
- We accept two kinds of coupons: Target-issued and manufacturer-issued.
- We’ll accept one Target coupon and one manufacturer coupon for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits it.
- We can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item; in this case, we’re able to adjust the value of the coupon to equal the price of the item.
- We can’t accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
- All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier while you’re checking out.
I also called customer service and asked about the specific wording on the Target coupons that states “limit one offer per transaction”. I asked several times with specific examples to be sure I understood and was told that that wording means one Target coupon for each item purchased! That means if you bought 4 of the same bars of soap, you could use 4 of the same Target coupons! She said the wording “one per purchase” means 1 Target coupon for each time you check out. She even made sure that I knew about their online Target coupons and that they can be stacked with manufacturer coupons! She then called my local Target store while I held on the other line to explain this to them. She gave them the specific example that I had been turned down for and talked to the store manager. She came back and apologized to me for all my trouble and assured me that the manager now understood the coupon wording and was to explain it to all the cashiers in the store!! I was so happy! I went last night and bought 4 boxes of Nabisco 100 calorie packs with 4 Target coupons and 4 Manufacturer coupons with no issues!
I would suggest that if you have had trouble of your own:
- Email Target corporate and get your own copy of the policy to keep with you.
- If you still have issues, call Target at 1-800-440-0680 and let them know your store location and problem so they can get it fixed for you!

Thank you for this post. My Target tried to tell me they no longer can type in the bar code on Target printable coupons. She said if it didn’t scan, they can’t take it. That’s nuts!
Also, I am never able to use $1 off coupons on something that is 97 cents. They refuse to adjust the price and say they can’t take it.
I will email them now!
SAHM,
Thanks for posting your experience. From all the info I read on my blog, I get the feeling that not only are the store managers literally ignorant many times, but that the coupon nazi cashiers just make up whatever they like and expect us to take it. I’m glad you followed through. You made a difference for yourself and everyone else.

Thanks Ginger and Jenny! I just got so fed up with getting different answers each time when I know there is a set in stone corporate policy! There is nothing worse than spending all the time to match up your coupons, calculate costs, etc and then get your coupons falsely denied. Hopefully if people keep calling, all the stores will eventually get it straight!
